“Watching television kills childhood fantasy”, the well-know English writer Roald Dahl declared in an interview, and I strongly agree with him. Dahl has always been against “the grey screen”, as he called television. He also created a character in order to show the negative effect of television on children: Mike, the selfish, passive and spoiled 10-years-old boy who follows Charlie Bucket in his trip inside The Chocolate Factory.

Children should never be allowed to sit down by themselves in front of television, not only because television kills imagination, as Dahl claimed. As far as I am concerned, there are two further reasons. First, as neurosciences show, there is a close relation between watching television and bad results at school. Second, it is widely known that television broadcasts programs which are not appropriate for children.

First of all, let us examine some numbers. According to some data, children who watch more than four hours of television pro day have 60% more likelihoods to fail their classes. They also jeopardize their health, because another research describe rising 80% in children eyes diseases, such as myopia and uncontrolled tears, as a consequence of watching too much television. This demonstrates in an objective way that television is a children enemy.

In addition, is it sufficient turning on television at whatever time of the day in order to understand that television’s programs are inappropriate for children. Violence, bad news, dead people, natural catastrophes, sexual issues are broadcasted on the screen every moment. Besides, almost every kind of educational program has been erased. Thus, we have to protect our children against watching images they could be upset about.

To summarize, for all the aforementioned reasons, I strongly agree that watching television is bad for children. When I have sons, I will buy them instead a bike and lot of books.
